Black art collection aims to educate

Paul R. Jones didn’t donate 1,700 pieces of art from his collection for the sake of charity alone.

Considered one of the top 100 art collectors in the U.S., Jones’ collection features work by black artists from around the world. With work by various painters, printmakers, photographers and sculptors, Jones’ collection has been named one of the largest and most comprehensive collection of 20th century black art.

But while Jones could have easily sold his collection, he saw more value in its educational opportunities.

“The purpose of the collection is to educate the university and the people in our community. It was a gift to the citizens of Alabama,” Jones said.
